"Antibiotics & You"

Synopsis: This 45-minute, interactive program was developed to increase consumer's knowledge of and influence their attitude toward the appropriate use of antibiotics. Areas covered include:

  • The differences between bacteria and viruses
  • How germs spread
  • What happens when you get sick
  • How antibiotics work
  • What antibiotic resistance is and what you can do about it
  • How to prevent infection and illness (handwashing, immunization,
    exercise, nutrition)

The material is directed to 4th - 6th graders, however, it can be used for any audience. Members of MARR conduct “train the trainer” sessions for teachers, school nurses and pharmacists who then present the “Antibiotics and You” material to school groups and other groups within their community. A 10 question pre- and post-test (identical questions) is given to the students to evaluate comprehension of content.

This program earned the 2003 Award for Excellence from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and has been adopted by over 30 state coalitions, nationwide, for use in their community education programs.
